Pegah Financial Assistance Fund

December 10, 2020

Who can apply for Pegah’s Financial Assistance Fund?

In choosing students for this fund, the priority is given to the following students:

  • Children of soldiers who have lost their lives in the war; children of individuals who have lost their lives in bomb blasts and terrorist attacks and the family, no more, has a breadwinner.
  • Children who have been displaced from their permanent residential cities or provinces and are currently struggling financially and socially.
  • Children from poor families who do not have sufficient income and are struggling financially in sustaining their basic needs.

Other than the three stated groups, education level and gender also plays a vital role in our selection process for the fund. Unfortunately, we are currently living in a male-dominant society. Most families do not offer the same support for their girls and boys; meaning there are still families who invest more on their sons. These families, if ever, run into a financial struggle, they would instantly take away their daughters’ educational opportunities and ask them to leave school. To fight this inappropriate cultural practice in Afghanistan, more fund is allocated for supporting girls’ education. Also, overall families pay more attention and invest more on their younger kids given they need more support and families cannot yet use them as an income source. This tightens the situation for older kids in the family who are expected to take part in solving family’s financial and household challenges. Thus, in selecting students’ application for financial support, we give priority to students who are in upper grades.

How to apply for Pegah’s Financial Assistance Fund?

Students who need financial assistance should apply at the beginning of the academic year during admission. Families need to first complete the fund’s form received from Financial Management Office. This form is then reviewed by a special team, consisting of the school’s management and trustee board members, to specify the school’s share based on the requested amount. In special cases, other than the tuition, the school also pays for a student’s uniform, stationary, transportation, and textbooks for the full academic year.

Other than completing the form, the financial management team requests an additional interview with families of newly admitted students because they want to learn better about these families’ familial and financial situation. The decision for financial support is shared with the families by the Financial Management Office. Applicants who seek more funding, can reapply and ask for additional fund.

Ways to donate to Pegah’s Financial Assistance Fund

Over the past few years, a number of generous individuals and Pegah’s staff have taken an active part in sustaining Pegah’s Financial Assistance Fund. These individuals have either contacted Pegah’s Trustees or the school’s management through social media and have contributed a specific amount. Some of these individuals have volunteered to pay the full academic cost of particular students while others have donated the money to the Pegah’s Financial Assistance Fund and have given the Fund’s trustees the full authority over choosing the students and the amount of money allocated to each student.
